Faith-based NGOs in South Africa hold a special responsibility and opportunity: to combine spiritual guidance with tangible social development. Office bearers are entrusted with stewardship over resources, governance structures, and the well-being of communities they claim to serve. Their basic duties include strategic planning, transparent financial management, stakeholder engagement, and ensuring that programmes address pressing social issues such as poverty, education, health, and youth development.
Yet, in many cases, these responsibilities are narrowly interpreted or rarely ever engaged with due diligence. Instead of implementing sustained programmes with measurable impact, some NGOs remain confined to religious observances and ceremonial events. This creates a gap between stated objectives—social development, empowerment, and upliftment—and actual practice. Too often, this ceremonial orientation is reinforced by a preachy inclination: office bearers lean on scripture or personalise feedback on their performance in public office, rather than engaging with constructive input through monitoring and evaluation systems
Monitoring and evaluation (M&E) exposes this critical shortfall, particularly in communities that need these resources most. Proper M&E requires data, clear indicators, and evidence of change.
“Authority is a trust from God. Whoever betrays this trust will face God’s wrath.” Imam Ridā (as)
Where accountability systems are absent, progress cannot be demonstrated, failures go unchecked, and credibility erodes. Ultimately, faith-based NGOs must broaden their mandate beyond worship, embracing the full duty of service through structured, transparent, and impactful programming aligned with their mission.
The opinion of the writers doesn’t reflect that of the Soweto Ahlul-bayt Jamaat, these impressions are based on personal experiences with Christian and Muslim faith based NGOs amongst Africans, and research conducted on two specific groups. We look forward to comments and critique on any points.
